Murphy ：And then the second lesson, the second lesson is that the Japanese, this elements of Japanese culture is a key to understanding so much also about Japan.
福原（通訳）：当然、日本の経済発展の手法およびその結果を理解するためには、日本人の文化や伝統、考え方を理解する必要がありますので、そういうこともこれから語ります。
Murphy ：Back in the 1990s, when I would go back to the States for holidays or something like that, I discovered that Japanese popular culture was making inroads abroad particularly in the United States that I was unaware of. My nephews were then small boys, and they were carrying on about the Ninja Turtles and Pokemon and so forth and they were really impressed that their uncle came from the land of Ninja and Pokemon.
福原（通訳）：1990年代、私は日本に住んでいましたが、いろいろな用事でアメリカに帰ると、漫画などをはじめとした日本の文化がアメリカに浸透し始めていると感じ始めました。ポケモンしかり、ニンジャ・タートルズは実はアメリカの作品ですが、「忍者」は日本のものです。私が日本からアメリカに帰ると、それだけで「ああ、おじさんはポケモンと忍者の国から来たんだね」と、私の甥などは結構ちやほやしてくれました。
Murphy ：Very surprised at this, yes. And I mean, you see today this global fascination with aspects of Japan’s contemporary culture. I mean, the term otaku for example, has become widely understood, as if things like cosplay, Hello Kitty, anime and manga, all that sort of stuff.
福原（通訳）：1990年代から、そのような日本のポップカルチャー、現代文化が浸透してきました。今はもう当たり前で、それこそ「オタク」という言葉は英語にもなっているようです。「コスプレ」も同様ですね。ですから、日本の現代のポップカルチャーの世界への浸透は、本当に素晴らしいものがあります。
