●日本だけでなく世界の産業を支える、日本の中小企業
Murphy :So this is really the second lesson, the importance of understanding Japanese culture in order to understand Japanese economics and politics, but the third lesson that I want the people to take away from this book, is that Japan still matters.
福原(通訳):それと3番目に強調したいことは、今、日本はいろいろと、その存在感が失われるなどと言われていますが、世界の中での日本の重要性は、やはり大きいと確信しています。
Murphy :There is a tendency, both here and abroad to think Japan passing and all that sort of stuff, but Japan is still a very powerful country and that is not just because of its location, the strategic location at the pivot of the world's number one economic growth area. Japan is still the world’s number three economy, and hidden elements of the economy are doing very, very well.
福原(通訳):日本の重要性ですが、「ジャパンパッシング」というような言葉で日本の存在感を軽視するような時期もありましたが、統計的に見ると日本は今でもGDPが世界で3位を誇る、確固たる経済大国ですし、アジアという世界で一番経済的に発展している地域で、軸となる国でもあります。
Murphy :I am thinking for example that, at the time of the Tohoku earthquake and then again the floods in Thailand later that year, all of a sudden supply chains around the world were disrupted.
Murphy :So that even though, some famous Japanese companies, consumer electronics company and some of them had difficulties, companies that are not so famous that manufacture things higher up the supply chain, are actually still doing very, very well.
福原(通訳):日本には有名な企業がたくさんありますが、実際に部品を供給しているのは、それほど知名度が高くない、たくさんの中小企業です。この東北の大震災およびタイの洪水で、日本の企業から部品が来なくなり、「そうか、日本は有名な企業だけでなく、あまり社名が知られていない企業であっても、世界のものづくりへの貢献度が本当に大きい」と世界で認識されたのだと思います。
●政治的実験室として、日本は世界に先駆ける
Murphy :The fourth lesson that I wanted readers to take away from this book and that is the last of the lessons I'll go into today, is really an aspect of the third lesson. And that fourth lesson is that Japan is a fascinating political laboratory.
福原(通訳):最後になりますが、4番目に強調したい点は、政治的には、日本は「政治の実験室」として非常に面白いということです。
Murphy :Japan has increasingly come to function as a kind a canary in the mind of the global economy.
福原(通訳):炭鉱の中に入るときには、危険を知らせてくれるカナリアを持っていきますが、日本の政治は、世界の中で一種あのような役割を政治的に果たしているような気がします。
Murphy :Japan was the first country to demonstrate something in the 1990s that is now obvious worldwide, which as the case was right, that monetary policy alone cannot loosen the shackles of a deflationary trap.
福原(通訳):日本は、ジョン・メイナード・ケインズが論じていた「金融政策によってデフレは止められない」ということを、1990年代に身をもって証明した最初の国でした。
Murphy :We've seen orgies of credit creations since 2008 by the Federal Reserve, the European central bank, following the Bank of Japan and yet the global economy today is sitting on the edge of a deflationary abyss, commodity prices are tumbling and country after country is spiraling downward.
福原(通訳):各国が日本銀行の手法のまねをして、自国の国債を買ったりして、お金をものすごく供給していますが、やはり世界の主要な先進国でのデフレの傾向は止められません。日本は最初にそのようなサイクルに入り、時がた...
