●日本だけでなく世界の産業を支える、日本の中小企業
So this is really the second lesson, the importance of understanding Japanese culture in order to understand Japanese economics and politics, but the third lesson that I want the people to take away from this book, is that Japan still matters.
日本人のまじめさや結束力の重要性について知ることが日本の政治経済を理解する上では必要で、そのために日本文化にも精通しなければいけないということが2番目の理由でした。そして、この本で3番目に強調したかったのは、日本は今でも重要な存在だということです。
There is a tendency, both here and abroad to think Japan passing and all that sort of stuff, but Japan is still a very powerful country and that is not just because of its location, the strategic location at the pivot of the world's number one economic growth area. Japan is still the world’s number three economy, and hidden elements of the economy are doing very, very well.
日本の栄光は過去のものだと考える傾向は、国内外問わず存在します。しかし日本は今でも非常に力強い国です。世界で最も経済成長しているアジア地域の中心点に日本があるという位置上の特徴だけでは、日本の強さは説明できません。現在の日本は世界第三の経済大国であり、その日本経済を支える見えない要素は、まだ健在なのです。
I am thinking for example that, at the time of the Tohoku earthquake and then again the floods in Thailand later that year, all of a sudden supply chains around the world were disrupted.
世界における日本の重要性を示す例として、先の東日本大震災や同年後半に起こったタイでの大洪水が挙げられます。どちらにしても、災害後、世界の部品供給が大きく混乱しました。日本の部品メーカーが東北やタイに多く存在していたからです。
So that even though, some famous Japanese companies, consumer electronics company and some of them had difficulties, companies that are not so famous that manufacture things higher up the supply chain, are actually still doing very, very well.
日本の有名な家電メーカーですら、製造が困難な状況に見舞われました。そのような大きな会社に部品を供給していたのは、それほど知られていない中小企業であり、彼らこそが非常に重要な役割を果たしていたのです。
●政治的実験室として、日本は世界に先駆ける
The fourth lesson that I wanted readers to take away from this book and that is the last of the lessons I'll go into today, is really an aspect of the third lesson. And that fourth lesson is that Japan is a fascinating political laboratory.
最後になりますが、この本で強調したい4番目の理由は、3番目の理由とは別の側面になります。それはすなわち、日本は政治的な実験室として非常に魅力ある存在だということです。
Japan has increasingly come to function as a kind a canary in the mind of the global economy.
日本は世界経済の中で、ある種、炭鉱内で危険を知らせるカナリアとしての機能をますます持つようになっています。
Japan was the first country to demonstrate something in the 1990s that is now obvious worldwide, which as the case was right, that monetary policy alone cannot loosen the shackles of a deflationary trap.
金融政策だけではデフレの連鎖を食い止めることができません。これは、今でこそ当たり前のことですが、日本はそれを1990年代に身をもって証明した最初の国でした。
We've seen orgies of credit creations since 2008 by the Federal Reserve, the European central bank, following the Bank of Japan and yet the global economy today is sitting on the edge of a deflationary abyss, commodity prices are tumbling and country after country is spiraling downward.
アメリカの連邦準備制度理事会や欧州中央銀行が、2008年以降行っている信用創造の数々は、日本銀行のやり方に追随したものです。しかし、今日の世界経済は、底深いデフレの淵ぎりぎりのところにいて、物価は下がり、国という国の経済がデフレ・スパイラルに陥っている状態です。
Last year when I was cruising the net, I came across a really interesting comment by a professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem by the name of Yuval Harari. His comment was; "You look at Japan today and Japan is maybe 20 years ahead of the world in everything."
